Mitch Curry's first goal for Whitby proved a decisive one as the Seasiders stay outside the NPL Premier's bottom four and keep one of their rivals at arm's length.
Good work from Adam Gell saw him loop a ball into the box for Layton Watts to lay across goal and Curry to fire in at the far post, inside six minutes.
Within four minutes, Nathan McGinley almost broke his duck for the Blues, only for the Basford keeper to make a good save from the centre-back's header.
Soon after, Aaron Haswell tested the gloveman who blocked, with his defence then charging down and clearing Haswell's rebound effort.
Curry curled just over the crossbar from distance, ten minutes before half-time.
The Nottinghamshire side came out of the blocks well, after the break, with Bland showing all his quality to save, eight minutes into the restart.
Around the hour, Haswell saw his shot blocked.
Former Town midfielder Jacob Gratton missed a great chance to level, but somehow missed out as Whitby held on for a crucial win, their first at home since November.
Defender Sam Collins spoke to Whitby Town TV after the victory:
Manager Gary Liddle was also pleased with what he called an important three points:
Blues go to Gainsborough on Tuesday and rivals Mickleover Sports on Saturday in a busy but crucial week for their NPL Premier safety.
