A community-led clean-up day is set to take place at Quarry Mount Park this Wednesday, aiming to give the local green space a "fresh lift".
The event, organised by the Quarry Mount Community Group, invites residents to help restore the park and make it a cleaner and safer space for everyone to enjoy.
The "Community Clean-Up & Cutback Day" will run from 10 am to 4 pm on Wednesday, 1st October, with volunteers meeting at the park.
According to the group, the day's activities will focus on tackling front hedges, cutting back overgrowth in the wetland area, and tidying up paths. Those participating will also undertake weeding and pruning jobs.
The group has outlined more ambitious tasks for "adventurous or energetic" volunteers, including cutting back the swamp area to figure out where the water course from two natural springs runs. This work is part of a larger plan to eventually install a new, more sustainable boardwalk and jetty around the frog and tadpole pond.
Organisers have stressed that any amount of help is welcome. A call for volunteers noted, "it's perfectly OK to just join us for 1/2hr or an hour if that's all you can manage", and urged people to "pitch in where you can". The event is positioned as a "great chance to meet neighbours, get some fresh air, and make a visible difference in our community".
The initiative has garnered support from local organisations. Scarborough Conservation Volunteers have confirmed they will be there to help, and M. Johnson's Gardening And Landscaping have offered their services for free. The clean-up is also being conducted with the assistance of council workers, who have allowed volunteers into the wetland to remove what is described as "years' worth of weeds". The group expressed hope that this will allow them to "see what we are working with".
Those wishing to participate are advised to bring their own gloves, sturdy shoes, and tools like secateurs if possible, though some equipment will be available to share. The organisers have also stated that they are only permitted to have 10 people working in the park at any one time and have asked prospective volunteers to contact them directly via their Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/events/1200955211796015
