Community Unites to Raise Over £10,000 for Whitby Lifeboat

Whitby RNLI's recent flag weekend event has successfully raised £10,962 to support the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) and its mission to save lives at sea.

The organisation says the funds will be crucial for training and equipping the lifeboat crew, ensuring their safety and effectiveness in emergency situations.

Senior Station Technician Richard Dowson expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support from the public, stating,

"We are overwhelmed by the generosity of the public at last weekend's event." He highlighted the collaborative efforts that contributed to this impressive fundraising total.

Key contributors to the success of the event included Andrew and Melissa Cass, who organized a grand summer raffle. Dowson noted, "A lot of hard work went into securing some amazing prizes and selling hundreds of tickets." He extended his thanks to the local businesses that donated prizes, as well as to everyone who purchased tickets.

The Friends of Whitby Lifeboat also played a significant role by running stalls throughout the weekend, further enhancing the fundraising efforts. Dowson specifically acknowledged Leah Hunter for her successful organization of the cake stall, which was a crowd favourite.

Additionally, members of the Lotus and Subaru clubs participated by collecting donations, adding to the overall total raised. Dowson expressed his appreciation for the crew's dedication, stating, "Lastly, I would like to thank the crew who were out from Friday with their collecting buckets, and spent the weekend setting up, packing down, demonstrating the boats and collecting."

The funds raised during this event are vital for the RNLI, as they provide essential resources for training and equipment. Dowson emphasised the importance of these contributions, noting, "This helps keep the crew safe when the pager sounds and gives us the best chance of helping those in need."

Looking ahead, the next flag weekend is scheduled for July 25th and 26th, 2026, promising another opportunity for the community to come together in support of this life-saving service.

The Whitby Lifeboat team thanks everyone involved for their generosity and commitment to maritime safety.
