Caravan Removed from Scarborough After Reports of Anti-Social Behaviour

The caravan was removed from Trafalgar Square in the town by the Police, Highways Agency and Borough Council.

Between 09:20am and 11:30am on 1st September 2022, Highways Agency staff, Police, and Scarborough Borough Council attended the area to facilitate the removal of a Caravan from the highway on Trafalgar Square.

The order was given by the Magistrates Court to the Highways Agency to remove the Caravan and other items belonging to the owner. Police attended to assist in maintaining order on site and to offer reassurance to residents and members of public in the community.

The removal comes after numerous reports of Anti-Social Behaviour surrounding the Caravan, along with reports that the toilet waste from the Caravan was being disposed of down alleyways and drains nearby.

Police say the resident of the Caravan has been engaged with a number of times over the last month, with members of Scarborough Borough Council, Neighbourhood Policing Team, and Highways Agency all engaging with the resident to encourage him to accept housing support. They say that all efforts by all agencies have been undertaken to ensure the resident received accommodation after the removal of his Caravan.

PC Ben Holtby, Beat Manager for the North Bay area of Scarborough was present at the time of the removal said,

"Todays action stems from a large amount of Multi-Agency work between Scarborough Borough Council, Police, Fire, Highways Agency and others.

A priority for us has always been the welfare of the resident of the Caravan, as the last thing we wanted was for the resident to be left without a place to live. Through this Multi-Agency approach, we were able to ensure that the resident has temporary accommodation available with a view to a longer term housing solution. After a long time coming, the removal was successful without a hitch!"

North Yorkshire Police say that if you experience any Anti-Social Behaviour in your area, you can report it by calling 101 or using the online reporting platform on the North Yorkshire Police Website.
