An abandoned Peugeot 107 believed to have been pushed over a cliff in Withernsea has been winched to safety by the local council.
An abandoned car that is thought to have been pushed over a cliff at Withernsea has been successfully winched to safety over the weekend.
Contractors working for East Riding of Yorkshire Council lifted the damaged Peugeot 107 up the cliff face near Waxholme Road on Saturday, 18 April.
The local authority decided to step in following mounting concerns over public safety and the potential impact on the local environment.
According to the council, the vehicle was not originally situated on council-owned property. Officials state that it originated from private land located at the top of the cliff.
However, as the car gradually fell further down the cliff face, the council carried out a detailed assessment of the situation and subsequently arranged for its safe recovery.
The vehicle has now been lifted onto a recovery lorry and taken away.
East Riding of Yorkshire Council has confirmed that the vehicle will now be thoroughly investigated by streetscene enforcement officers, who are treating it as an abandoned vehicle.
At present, the local authority remains unable to trace the owner of the Peugeot.
The council believes that the car is linked to an illegal encampment which had previously been situated at the top of the cliff.
Councillor Paul West, the council’s cabinet member for environment and transport, said:
"We arranged for our contractors to remove the vehicle from the cliff on Saturday.
As much debris from the car was removed as possible, but we urge people to be cautious around the area where the vehicle was, in case of broken glass and other objects.
Warning signs have been placed at the site."
