Plans for a domestic violence refuge in Scarborough need to be urgently progressed according to local councillors.
The area has the highest domestic violence rate in North Yorkshire.
Construction of a refuge has been approved twice, but high inflation in the cost of building materials has delayed the build.
Filey Councillor Sam Cross says the project needs to be moved along.
Yorkshire Coast Councillors have put pressure on the county council to press on with construction of the domestic violence refuge in the town.
The plans were first proposed in 2015, they've been approved twice, but inflation in the cost of building materials has delayed the start of the build.
Speaking at a county council meeting last week Councillor Subash Sharma pressed the authority to get the project moving.
County Councillor for Falsgrave and Stepney, Liz Colling, told the council meeting at County Hall in Northallerton that domestic abuse incidents reported to North Yorkshire Police in the county had risen from 7,825 to 8,652 in 2021, adding that the strain of the cost of living crisis on households was likely to exacerbate the trend.
Underlining its widespread impact on communities, she added 25 per cent of domestic abuse victims were male.
