Call for Increased Accessibility in Scarborough Borough

There's a call for more business on the Yorkshire Coast to help make the area accessible.

We reported last week that Scarborough Borough Council has said it will be installing three further public changing places accessible toilets in Filey, Whitby and Scarborough.

Councillor Carl Maw says he hopes that will be a catalyst for local businesses to play their part.

The organisation "Purple"  supports organisations across public and private sectors to become more accessible and disability inclusive, it says there are more than 14 million disabled people in the UK who have a combined spending power of £274 billion. They say it's estimated that 75% of disabled people and their families have walked away from a UK business because of poor accessibility or customer service.

The new accessible changing places toilets are being installed as part of an ongoing revamp of the area's public conveniences.

Councillor Michelle Donohue-Moncrieff says the historical lack of facilities has been a problem.
