Better monitoring of the North Sea's water quality is needed if future environmental issues are to be avoided.
That's the call from one MP who says the monitoring of water quality off the Yorkshire Coast has not been improved despite the mass shellfish die off in 2021.
Speaking in the House of Commons, Stockton North MP - Alex Cunningham says more needs to be done to help avoid similar problems in the future.
Speaking on a debate about the fishing industry in the house of commons Stockton North MP - Alex Cunningham called on the government to step up water monitoring.
The MP called for the current range of water sampling to be enhanced and expanded to include monitoring of sediments.
Alex Cunningham also raised concerns about the way UK scientists deal with pollution data and expressed his worries over the wider effects of pollution in the North Sea.
Responding to concerns raised in the commons debate, the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, Rebecca Pow MP, agreed that there does need to be continued monitoring of the situation off the North East coast.
