There are calls for Council Housing to built in Scarborough and Eastfield to help tackle the lack of affordable homes.
Not enough progress is being made delivering new affordable homes in Eastfield.
That's the view of local councillor Tony Randerson who says housing association projects in the town are moving too slowly.
Councillor Randerson says local housing associations are not delivering enough new housing, he wants the council to get more involved.
Scarborough currently has high housing needs with over 2,500 households on the waiting list and high levels of homelessness or threat of homelessness. The lack of suitable accommodation for families often leads to placement in expensive temporary housing.
North Yorkshire Council announced last month that is is acquiring 11 new-build properties in Scarborough to be used as affordable rented accommodation. These homes will be rented to local households in need, specifically those who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.
Councillor Simon Myers agrees that there does need to be more social housing but says the process isn't quick.
The council's target is for 500 new homes to be delivered over the next 5 years across North Yorkshire with these homes being rented to local households in need.
