Brown bins will be collected weekly in two stages starting from February for homes in the East Riding.
East Riding of Yorkshire Council is introducing the shift to meet a new Government directive that all authorities must collect food waste from all households on a weekly basis.
The changes are being funded by the Government and will be extended to all East Riding residents by 2027.
Brown bins – used to dispose of and recycle food and garden waste – are currently collected fortnightly in the East Riding.
The weekly collections of brown bins will begin from Monday 9 February for two thirds of the East Riding – including the Bridlington, Driffield, Holderness, Market Weighton and Goole areas.
They will then be rolled out to the remaining third from February 2027 to towns and villages in the Beverley, Cottingham, Willerby, Brough, Anlaby and Hessle areas.
To accommodate the new rounds the council has created more than 50 new jobs for additional bin crews and is due to buy 16 new bin lorries, funded by the Government.
To prepare for the change, the council’s waste and recycling team is urging residents to make an extra special effort to recycle all their food waste using their brown bins and kitchen caddies.
Although the team understands brown bins will be less full in winter months, residents are being encouraged to keep recycling food waste and putting out their bins, as weekly collections are required as part of the Government's Simpler Recycling initiative intended to boost recycling and reduce waste sent for disposal.
Councillor Paul West, the council’s cabinet member for environment and transport, said:
“Thank you in advance to residents for supporting the new weekly brown bin collections.
“People in the East Riding are among the very best recyclers in the country and I have no doubt we can rely on them to back these new changes and recycle as much food waste as they can.”
All bin collection days to change
Everyone’s bin collection days will change when the new weekly rounds begin – for all brown, blue and green bins.
Blue and green bins, however, will still be collected fortnightly.
All households will be sent a recycling information pack through the post in the next few weeks which will include a bin collection calendar showing their new dates for 2026/27.
People can also download the East Riding of Yorkshire Council app to get the new dates on their mobile phones. More than 99,000 people have downloaded the app so far and signed up to receive bin day reminders – which will automatically send them notifications for their new bin days.
What goes in the brown bin?
Brown bins can be used to dispose of all cooked and uncooked food, out-of-date food, peelings, plate scrapings, bones, meat, eggshells, teabags and small amounts of sauces and gravies. They can still take all garden waste too.
All the contents of the brown bins get recycled into compost locally. The council gives away some of that compost for free each year to local residents at special events.
Free starter packs
To encourage people to recycle more of their food waste, the council has a number of free starter packs available for people who don’t already already have kitchen caddies. The packs include a kitchen caddy and two rolls of caddy liners, which will be delivered to your home for free.
