Bridlington RNLI Seeks Launch Vehicle Drivers in Essential Recruitment Drive

The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) Lifeboat Station in Bridlington has announced a drive to recruit a volunteer Tractor Driver to aid their lifesaving operations.

The role, officially titled Tractor Driver (SLARS), is critical for ensuring the safe operation of the station's lifeboats.

The RNLI, described as "the charity that saves lives at sea", is searching for committed individuals to join the team in Bridlington. The organisation states that this role is necessary to help them "save lives at sea by assisting with the safe launch and recovery of the lifeboat on service and exercise".

Key Responsibilities

As a launch vehicle driver, the volunteer will be primarily responsible for the manoeuvring of the lifeboats during critical operational moments. The role involves "Taking charge of the launch vehicle and rig during the launch and recovery of the lifeboat for services and exercises under the direction of the Head Launcher, Coxswain or Helm". The volunteer is also required to maintain and clean the tractor.

Furthermore, the successful candidate will contribute to the general operational readiness of the station. According to the RNLI, duties include contributing "to the overall upkeep of the station, lifeboats and equipment", and assisting station staff with maintenance and repairs as appropriate. Volunteers are expected to maintain competence under the relevant Competency Framework.

Requirements and Commitment

The RNLI stresses that candidates should share their organisational commitment to values such as being trustworthy, courageous, selfless, and dependable.

Candidates applying for the position are required to possess specific skills and meet logistical criteria:

  • Strong team working skills and good interpersonal skills are deemed necessary.
  • Applicants must have local maritime and RNLI knowledge.
  • The ability to learn new skills is also required.

The charity has stated that, for operational necessity, applicants must "Live or work in close proximity of the station". Prospective volunteers must be between 17 and 65 years of age upon application, with a stepping down age of 70 for the role.

The time commitment for this position is variable, but volunteers must be willing to respond to the operational needs of the lifeboat station. This may include volunteering "at weekends and anti-social hours".

Training and Support

For those concerned about technical requirements, the RNLI confirms that training will be provided to fulfil the volunteer role, in line with the relevant Competency Framework.

Joining the Bridlington crew offers several rewards. Volunteers gain "the satisfaction of giving back" and have the opportunity to develop skills and experience. The RNLI describes its team as "motivated and enthusiastic," offering volunteers the chance to "have fun, meet new people". The charity also reimburses reasonable out of pocket expenses incurred during volunteering.

The RNLI is committed to diversity, noting that their staff and volunteers "have been saving lives at sea without prejudice for 200 years". The organisation is described as inclusive and welcomes applications from everyone.

The closing date for applications for the Tractor Driver (SLARS) role is 7 December 2025. The role falls under Lifesaving Operations and reports to the Lifeboat Operations Manager. As part of the recruitment process, the suitability of prospective volunteers will be assessed in line with the RNLI’s commitment to safeguarding, which includes relevant criminal record checks.
