A new Community Interest Company, known as Bridlington Ambassadors, has been established with the goal of advocating for positive change and supporting growth in the town.
The formation of the group, led by local figures David Dowson and Martyn Coltman, comes as a direct response to East Riding of Yorkshire Council (ERYC) no longer operating the long-running Bridlington Regeneration Partnership, which concluded after 27 years.
Bridlington Ambassadors intends to continue some of the regeneration work that is not yet complete. Martyn Coltman, who has lived in Bridlington for 62 years, stated that he and David Dowson decided to form the CIC to keep this work going and help support the town.
"everyone likes to put their town first, don't they? But I mean, we sell the coast, don't we 'cause , it's a package for everyone , visitors, they don't care who runs which authority, whether it's Scarborough, Whitby, Filey, Bridlington, Hornsea, Withernsea, it's just part of the package that people, you know, love to come and visit.
We've just launched the new version of the Briton Regeneration Partnership, which came to a formal end last year after 27 years. Achieved an awful lot. So David Dowson from Lloyd Dowson and myself, we decided that we needed to form a CIC and continue some of the work of the Regeneration partnership because there's work that still isn't complete that we we want to see. Across the town. So we're formulating a 10 year plan"
Bridlington Ambassadors has a board of local volunteer directors. The group is described as a business-focused entity with a tight remit. Its three key aims include promoting the town's shellfish heritage, development, and status; helping support tourism; and building on the town's cultural offering.
Beyond these core aims, the group's planned activities for the 10-year period involve working on town centre issues, including a project focused on bringing empty shops back into use. They also plan to relaunch the Bridlington Business Awards for January next year and work closely with Bridlington in Bloom and Bridlington Police on "quality of life issues".
Partnership working is a key part of the Bridlington Ambassadors' approach. Martin Coltman says they plan to work in close partnership with ERYC Local Growth and Regeneration teams.
"We've got some town centre things that we're going to be working on.
We've got project working on empty shops to bring those back into use. We're relaunching the Ton Business Awards for January next year. Working closely with Bridlington in Bloom and Bridlington Police to change quality of life issues really.
So yeah, there's a lot to do. Working very closely with East Riding, we've always worked closely with them for the last 25 years. They've got some great projects building under and obviously having the mayor in place, there's some funding to draw down.
So yeah, there's lots of exciting things happening. "
The group is also seeking to build other key partnerships across the town. They recently extended an invitation to local businesses to an open meeting to gather ideas on areas where support and growth can be achieved, particularly in the current "era of tricky trading across the UK".
