Bridlington Town have their second home game of the week on Saturday, as top-of-the-table Cleethorpes Town travel up the coast to the Mounting Systems Stadium in the Northern Premier League East.
The Seasiders stopped a run of three losses on the trot when they drew 1-1 midweek against Brighouse Town. Michael Coulson scored his fourth goal in six games under new manager Mike Thompson, though five minutes later Akeel Francis netted the equaliser.
After the match, Thompson said:
“Being back at home we set the boys up for a win. Overall, though it feels like two points dropped. Once we took the lead, we felt like we had control.
“In the second half, we had 14 corners and an unbelievable amount of chances to take the game away from them.”
The Bridlington gaffer also provided an injury update:
“Danny (Earl), we had him in with Josh (Hairsine, physio). The injury is not a problem, but his mobility, he’s struggling with it,”
he commented.
Earl started the game after two games out of the side, but was forced off after 55 minutes and was replaced by Matty Dixon.
Thompson added:
“It feels like we’ve been like this for a couple of weeks. We’ve been stop-start with certain players and injuries. We’re desperate to get Benn Lewis back amongst it, he’s warmed up tonight but we’re not sure yet.
“Cam (Connelly) will be back on Saturday, which is positive, so we’ll get Cam training in the week.”
Connelly made his first start since joining from Beverley Town against Grimsby Borough, but was substituted early due to a thigh problem.
The Seasiders moved out of the relegation zone after picking up a point midweek, as they rose to 18th and overtook Sherwood Colliery.
As for Saturday’s opponents, they currently lead the way in the Northern Premier League East Division with 58 points, one more than second-placed Emley AFC, with a game in hand over the West Yorkshire side.
The Owls’ trip to Bridlington is their third consecutive away game, and they picked up victories in the previous two, beating Heaton Stannington and Newton Aycliffe 2-1 and 3-1, respectively.
As you would expect, they have plenty of attacking threat, with three players on double digits for goals in Josh Walker (18), Curtis Bateson (15) and Adam Haw (13).
Walker and Bateson have 14 and 12 league goals, making them the third and fourth most prolific players in the division.
When the two sides faced each other in Lincolnshire earlier in the season, Cleethorpes stole all three points in the 93rd minute to win 3-2. In fact, the Owls have won all seven games against Bridlington since the Seasiders were promoted to the Northern Premier League.
Former Cleethorpes player Sam Kay netted the opening goal for Bridlington in that 3-2 defeat last time out, and Craig Rouse’s outfit also have a former Bridlington player in their ranks in Will Annan, who’s made 30 appearances this campaign for the Owls.
