Boro included two trialists in their 17-man squad, but it was established midfielder Kieran Glynn who put them ahead early on after chasing down an attempted clearance from the home keeper.
The Tigers equalised but the Seadogs' trialist striker put them ahead again, only for the Nottinghamshire side to level once more, moments later.
The second half saw Worksop lead for the first time with two more goals.
Athletic go to Brackley in their first-ever National North fixture on Saturday, you can hear it all on This is The Coast Extra from 3.00pm.
