£2m Bridlington Road and Path Upgrade Begins

Bridlington Bus Station and a number of local roads will be closed next week as a major road and path improvement scheme gets underway in Bridlington.

East Riding of Yorkshire Council is to invest more than £2m in the scheme, which will involve the resurfacing of a number of roads in need of work in order to upgrade them for the future.

The scheme will be carried out in four phases, with the first phase due to begin on Monday 28 November.

Phase one

Road resurfacing and kerbing work will first be carried out in Princess Terrace and Princess Street, at the back of the Promenades Shopping Centre, near to Bridlington Bus Station.

The work is due to start on Monday 28 November and is scheduled to last eight days, with work carried out from Mondays to Fridays.

During the scheme, Princess Terrace and Princess Street will be closed to traffic, and Clarence Road will be changed to a two-way system to accommodate access.

The bus station will need to be closed during the works, with alternative bus stops created in Queen Street and Promenade.

East Yorkshire Buses say the alternative stops being used during the works are as follows:

Stop A: Promenade northbound:
Services 6/12/12A/12C/14

Stop B: Promenade southbound:
Services 2/3/4/5/5A & 124

Stop C: Queen Street:
Services 45/121/121C/122B/130 & 136

Phase two

This will be carried out in Limekiln Lane, between Sewerby Road and the Second Avenue junction, and is due to start on Wednesday 4 January.

The work will include pre-surface dressing patching between Sewerby Road and the North Bay Leisure Park, then the road between the park and Second Avenue will be resurfaced.

This phase is scheduled to take five weeks to complete, with work being carried out on Mondays to Fridays, from 9am-5pm.

During working hours, Limekiln Lane will be closed to through traffic, but access will still be given to residents and businesses in the works area.

The coach park in Limekiln Lane will be closed on Tuesday 24 and Wednesday 25 January.

Phase three

George Street is to be resurfaced in the third phase of the scheme.

The first part will see work between Kingsgate to just past Our Lady and Saint Peter’s Primary School.

This is scheduled be carried out during the half-term holiday to minimise any disruption., starting on Monday 13 February.

The work will take seven days to complete, being carried out between Monday and Sunday, 9am-5pm.

The second part will see George Street being resurfaced between the Kingsgate and Cardigan Road junctions, starting on Monday 20 February.

The work will be carried out from Monday to Friday, 9am-5pm, with kerbing and drainage improvements also being made.

During working hours, George Street will be closed to through traffic, but access will be given to residents in the area.

Phase four

The last phase of the scheme will see work being carried out along Queensgate, between Fortyfoot junction and Hustler Road.

This is due to start on Monday 20 February, working Monday to Friday 9am-5pm, and is scheduled to take 12 weeks to complete.

The work will include the reconstruction of the footpath along both sides of the road, along with repairs to the road.

The footpath works will start first, using localised traffic management.

During the road repairs, which are scheduled to start on 20 April for three weeks, Queensgate will be closed to through traffic, but access will be given to residents and businesses in the area.

The improvement work will be carried out by council contractor CR Reynolds Ltd and the scheme is part of the council’s annual programme of road maintenance.

Councillor Chris Matthews, the council’s portfolio holder for environment and climate change, said:

“This road scheme is much needed in order to improve these lengths of road and path for the future.

“We want to thank residents and business owners in these areas for their patience in advance while these works are completed.”
