North Yorkshire Police have reported 129 arrests in July as part of their summer drink and drug driving campaign aimed at promoting road safety.
The initiative, which launched on July 1, included a social media campaign that has garnered over 250,000 views. The campaign’s message urges individuals to consider their transport options after consuming alcohol, emphasizing the severe consequences of driving under the influence.
Inspector Clive Turner of North Yorkshire Police stated,
“We're committed to making the roads in North Yorkshire safer for everyone, which is why we put in place the additional patrols in pursuit of those who put lives at risk by driving under the influence.
"Our officers are so passionate about the drink and drug driving campaigns as they have witnessed first-hand the devastating aftermath of drink and drug driving collisions; they are entirely preventable.
“This year’s summer campaign launched with us releasing a social media reel to ask the public to think about their transport options home. We have received overwhelming positive feedback about this short video, and I hope it has resonated with anyone who has considered driving after drinking alcohol.
The campaign's most alarming statistic came from a single incident on July 27, where a man in his 30s was arrested after being reported for erratic driving on the A19. He registered a breath alcohol level of 155 micrograms per 100 millilitres, far exceeding the legal limit of 35 micrograms. Following his arrest, he was charged and remanded in custody.
The police have reiterated that drink and drug driving is among the leading causes of road collisions and is classified as one of the "fatal five" driving offences, which also include careless driving, not wearing a seatbelt, excessive speed, and using a mobile phone while driving.
The summer campaign has not only increased police visibility on the roads but has also engaged the community in discussions about safe transportation choices. Inspector Turner expressed gratitude for the positive feedback received regarding their social media efforts and emphasised the ongoing commitment to tackling drink and drug driving in the region.
“There is no let-up; we will continue to be relentless in our approach to targeting those people who think it is acceptable to drive when under the influence of drink or drugs,”
