BBC defends decision to remove trans rights slogan from Strictly Come Dancing episode

The BBC has defended its decision to remove a trans rights slogan from an episode of Strictly Come Dancing, saying the move was "in line with our editorial guidelines".

The slogan "Protect the Dolls", which appeared on a T-shirt worn by actress Bethany Antonia, was edited out of Saturday's broadcast of the popular show.

In a pre-recorded clip, the House Of The Dragon star could be seen rehearsing with professional dance partner Nancy Xu in a plain white shirt.

However, in social media footage of what appeared to be the same rehearsal, Antonia could be seen wearing a T-shirt with the slogan visible. The clip had been shared by the BBC the day before the episode aired.

A BBC spokesperson said: "As is standard practice on any entertainment show on the BBC and in line with our editorial guidelines, appropriate steps are taken to reduce the inclusion of any overt branding or slogans that may be present, regardless of the wording or statement in question."

"Protect the Dolls" is a slogan that originated in the 1980s ballroom scene, and expresses support of transgender women, who are known as "dolls" in the LGBTQ+ community.

Clothing bearing the slogan has previously been worn by stars including actors Pedro Pascal and Tilda Swinton, and singer Troye Sivan.

All proceeds from the sale of the T-shirt, which was created by fashion designer Conner Ives and costs £75, are donated to Not A Phase, a UK-based charity offering programmes, events, and support spaces for the trans community.

In a statement, Not A Phase CEO Danielle St James said: "The slogan might not have made it to air, but the message reached us loud and clear.

"We've seen the BBC's explanation. Here's what we'd add: Protecting trans+ people isn't a slogan or a controversy. It's a basic commitment to people's safety and dignity, and it should never feel risky to say out loud. That's what this shirt stands for.

"Thank you always to anyone and everyone who stands for and with our community."

Sky News has contacted Antonia's representatives for comment.
