Son of Israeli ambassador to US 'seriously injured' in West Bank ramming attack

The son of Israel's ambassador to the US has reportedly been seriously injured in a ramming attack in the occupied West Bank.

Ambassador Yechiel Leiter said in a post on X that his son Neria, a reservist in the Israeli military, "needs a miracle" following the incident on Wednesday afternoon.

According to the military and law enforcement, a Palestinian man rammed his car into a security checkpoint near the settlement of Beit Horon, seriously wounding the officer.

Israeli forces at the scene then "opened fire at the terrorist as he attempted to flee" and killed him. More military forces were sent to the area following the incident.

The IDF said in a statement that "an IDF reserve soldier was severely injured as a result of the ramming attack at a checkpoint in the Benyamin Regional Brigade".

The soldier was evacuated to receive treatment at a hospital, the statement added.

Ambassador Leiter said: "I am grateful to the IDF, to the medical team at Shaare Zedek who are now fighting to save the life of Neria Dov ben Chana, and for the prayers of the people of Israel.

"I believe in the power of prayer, and I believe that when the people of Israel unite, miracles happen. Neria needs a miracle."

The suspect was identified as Mahmoud Suleiman, according to the Palestinian health ministry.

Mr Leiter's older son, Moshe Yedidya Leiter, who also served in Israel's military, was killed in Gaza just days after Hamas' 7 October 2023 attack on Israel, which triggered the war in the besieged enclave.

President Isaac Herzog said in a statement: "Allow me to offer a prayer for the complete and speedy recovery of Neria Leiter, a reservist soldier who was run over today in a heinous terror attack at the Maccabim checkpoint.

"Neria Leiter is the brother of Major Moshe Leiter, of blessed memory, a hero of Israel who fell at the beginning of the Swords of Iron War in Gaza.

"We send our wishes for a complete recovery to Neria, and strength to his wife and to his parents, Hannah and Yechiel Leiter, Israel's Ambassador to the United States.

"Neria is fighting for his life at this very hour, and we will pray for his recovery. We all stand with this dear family and send them our strength."
