Residents evacuated after flash flooding destroys homes in Nepal

Flash flooding has destroyed homes along a river in the central part of Nepal, with residents being evacuated by helicopter.

It comes as the country is still recovering from August's devastating flood along the Nepal-China border in which more than 1,400 people were killed and thousands of others are missing.

Authorities said on Sunday a dry landslide in Chumnubri village in Gorkha district, about 60 miles west of the capital Kathmandu, blocked the Budhi Gandaki river, leading to ‌flooding.

The Budhi Gandaki merges into the Trishuli river, downstream from another tributary where a glacier collapse caused the catastrophic flood in August.

Gorkha district's top official, Dharmendra Kumar Mishra, said on Sunday about a dozen houses and two suspension bridges had been swept ‌away, adding that a hydroelectric project camp had also been damaged by the flood.

"We have asked villagers living along the river banks downstream to evacuate and remain safe," he said.

National disaster authorities alerted people living along the river in the Gorkha, Tanahun, Chitwan, East Nawalparasi and West Nawalparasi districts about the flood.

There were no reports of any casualties.

Some 18 workers at the hydroelectric project escaped to safety.

And the army rescued six people from Jagat who were facing the risk of a landslide, Prime Minister Balendra Shah said on social media.

A highway ‌bridge connecting Gorkha with the neighbouring Dhading district was washed away, said Dharam Raj Uprety, chief of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority.

Videos on social media showed houses and sheds being swept away by the swollen river flowing between mountains.

Last Monday, the prime minister's office announced search and rescue operations for additional victims of August's disaster would end.

Authorities will concentrate on recovery, including restoring roads and bridges cut off by floods, particularly in remote areas where damaged infrastructure has made delivering aid difficult.

The government has said the rebuilding effort will cost $4.77bn (£3.6bn).

Nearly 33,000 people have been affected and about 7,500 homes were damaged or destroyed.
