Concerns over a lack of medical and transport infrastructure have been raised as plans progress for thousands of new homes in Cayton.
Medical and transport infrastructure must be delivered alongside thousands of new homes planned for Cayton, a local councillor has warned.
Fears are mounting that the local area will be completely overwhelmed by the sheer scale of the proposed housing developments. The massive expansion is expected to eventually bring more than two thousand new properties to the village, effectively transforming a rural settlement into a small town.
Current residents are already facing significant challenges with the capacity of local services. This has prompted urgent calls for North Yorkshire Council to guarantee that necessary facilities, including doctors and transport links, will be constructed in tandem with the new houses.
Councillor Roberta Swiers said:
"We talk about rail services, but Seamer is a very busy station, very limited parking. But, we're on about this escalation of a more or less a town to fit in with Cayton Village, which will consist of over 2,000 houses eventually. Those people have to work somewhere. They have to get to places. You know, a lot, when I talk around the village, a lot of even our people in the village now work in York or Leeds. Are we going to move with these houses going to be built, are we going to build the transport that goes with it? Because we're stuck."
The anticipated influx of new residents is expected to place unprecedented strain on existing transport links. Commuters rely heavily on local rail connections and the nearby road network to reach major employment hubs across the region.
Historically, previous local government discussions had explored potential solutions to ease traffic and parking congestion. However, those initiatives have yet to materialise, leaving a void in the strategic planning for the village's future transport needs.
With four separate building developments already completed in the village over the past five years alone, the prospect of a further two and a half thousand homes has sparked fears of total gridlock on the roads.
Councillor Swiers added:
"We're stuck in a village where it's almost immobilised because we've a small village thoroughfair to the A64, with a business park, which isn't very well used. Little bit better now, but all these houses, my worry is they're going to want to take a train. Years ago at Scarborough Council, we did talk plans for a Seamer station and maybe a park and ride coming from that business park and all this seems to have gone very flat. What's the position going forward then with these houses? Within the last 5 years, we've had four lots of building done in one village. This is without these 2 and a 1/2 thousand. We have no medical, nothing."
Mayor David Skaith has offered assurances that infrastructure improvements will follow the housing growth. Seeking to allay concerns, he highlighted the new medical facility located at nearby Eastfield as a tangible sign of progress regarding local infrastructure delivery.
Despite these promises from the Mayor, the volume of homes planned for Cayton has left local representatives deeply concerned about the real-world impact on daily life. Commuting, healthcare access, and road congestion remain at the forefront of the debate.
