Over 80 injured after bus plunges down Spanish hillside

More than 80 people have been injured, including seven seriously, after a bus plunged off the side of road in Catalonia, Spain.

Authorities said the coach left the road and "plunged" down a steep ravine on a mountain road in Fogars de Montclus, located between Barcelona and Girona.

In total 83 people were injured in the crash, with 24 being taken to hospital, the Catalan emergency services said.

A total of 23 ambulances and two medical helicopters were deployed to the scene, alongside psychological support and rescue teams.

Catalonia's Corps of Firefighters said drones and sniffer dogs would be sent to the scene, with "intensive searches" being carried out around the bus to ensure no casualties have been missed.

An alert for the incident was issued just after 4pm UK time, with emergency services receiving at least 25 calls about the crash and regional police closing part of the BV-5114 road where the accident took place.

Catalonia's police force said it was working to investigate the causes of the accident.

A Red Cross reception centre has been set up at Can Ramis in Sant Celoni, to help people affected by the accident.

Salvador Illa, the president of the Catalonian government said on X: "I am following with great concern the bus accident in Fogars de Montclus"

He thanked emergency services for their work and said he was in "constant contact" with Catalonia's interior minister and health minister.
