Amber warning for snow as well as risk of heavy rain, strong winds and flooding

An amber warning for snow is in force in Scotland, along with multiple yellow warnings across the UK for strong winds, ice and heavy rain, which could trigger flooding.

The amber warning covers central and northeastern Scotland, stretching across an area north of Glasgow to Aberdeen, and continues until 2pm on Sunday.

Up to 30cm (12in) of snow is possible on higher ground, although 2 to 5cm (0.7 to 3in) is likely at lower levels, according to the Met Office.

It follows days of heavy snowfall, ice and sub-zero temperatures in Scotland and other parts of the UK.

On Thursday and Friday, Storm Goretti triggered school closures and travel disruption, and prompted a rare red weather warning ahead of winds recorded at nearly 100mph in the South West.

Police said a man in his 50s was found dead on Thursday evening after a tree fell on to a caravan in the Mawgan area of Helston, Cornwall.

Met Office forecaster, Greg Dewhurst, said there will be a "very unsettled start" to Sunday with "outbreaks of heavy rain, strong winds and also snow".

He added there was currently a transition from recent cold weather to milder temperatures but also "an increase in risk of heavy rain, strong winds, snow initially, which will then melt and lead to the risk of flooding."

Wider yellow warnings for challenging weather conditions - including snow, rain, wind and ice - are in place in across parts of the UK for the remainder of the weekend into Monday.

The Met Office has issued yellow warnings for:

:: Snow and ice across much of Scotland, the East and West Midlands, north-east and north-west England and Yorkshire until 3pm on Sunday.

:: Wind across Scotland, Northern Ireland and an area of England north of Newcastle until 9pm on Sunday. A second warning for wind from 9pm on Sunday to midday on Monday covers an area north of Glasgow.

:: Rain covering northwest Scotland until 10am on Monday, another warning for rain in southwest Scotland until the end of Sunday and a third warning for Northern Ireland until 9pm on Sunday. In all cases, flooding is possible.

:: Ice across the East Midlands and North East, including parts of Yorkshire and Lincolnshire, until 11am on Sunday.

Warmer than Madrid

Despite the unsettled conditions, it is forecast to turn milder in the coming days.

Plymouth is predicted to see highs of 13C (55F) on Sunday, and Manchester could potentially reach 10C (55F). That compares to 8C (46F) in Madrid, according to the Met Office.

Sky News weather producer Dr Chris England said: "Southerly winds associated with bands of rain spreading from the southwest will make it much milder... ending the current cold spell, with the warmer conditions moving into western parts first."

He added that the snow will become largely confined to northern Scottish mountains by midday, before turning to rain almost everywhere.

The rain, heavy at times, combined with snow melt due to the rising temperatures, will bring a risk of localised flooding.
