UK weather: Yellow warnings issued as rain set to batter parts of UK this weekend

Thursday, 18 September 2025 14:38

By Jo Robinson, weather producer

Rain is set to continue over the next few days, with potentially disruptive weather this weekend.

Friday will bring rain to central parts of Britain and the south of Ireland, but many other areas will be dry with some sunshine.

It will turn warmer, becoming very warm and humid across South East England.

A high of 27C (81F) is possible.

A deepening area of low pressure will move across the UK this weekend, bringing heavy rain, strong winds and perhaps some thunderstorms.

The Met Office has issued two yellow warnings of heavy rain for Saturday through to early Sunday.

One covers the east of Northern Ireland, where 20mm to 40mm is expected quite widely, with as much as 80mm in some locations.

The other affects southern Scotland, northern England and the north and west of Wales, where up to 100mm is possible.

Travel disruption and localised flooding is possible.

Thunderstorms will be a risk across South East England.

The wind will pick up too, with gales likely, especially at the coast.

The exact track of the low-pressure system is a little uncertain, so as confidence improves further weather warnings may be issued.

It will turn colder from the North, with daytime temperatures widely below average on Sunday.

Monday marks the autumn equinox - with much drier and calmer conditions likely for the start of the astronomical autumn.

It will remain on the cold side, with overnight frosts likely in some rural spots. High pressure is expected to settle things down early next week.
