Teenager appears in court over death of Glasgow man

Thursday, 8 October 2026 19:10

By Jenness Mitchell, Scotland reporter

A teenager has appeared in court over the death of a young man who died after an alleged assault in Glasgow city centre.

Daniel Colrain, 21, was seriously injured in Royal Exchange Square during the early hours of Sunday.

He was taken to hospital, where he died on Monday.

Luis Cameron, 19, was arrested and charged in connection with Mr Colrain's death.

He appeared before Glasgow Sheriff Court on Thursday, where he made no plea to the charges of culpable homicide and attempting to pervert the course of justice.

Cameron, of Paisley in Renfrewshire, was released on bail ahead of his next court appearance, which is yet to be confirmed.

Mr Colrain worked at The Old Smiddy bar in Glasgow, where staff have set up a fundraiser in his memory which has raised more than £27,000.

In a message on the JustGiving page, Mr Colrain's colleagues said they were "completely heartbroken" by his loss and had set up the fundraiser to support his family and assist with his funeral and memorial arrangements.

They said: "To know Daniel was to experience his warmth and kindness first-hand.

"Over the past three years at The Smiddy, he built wonderful friendships with every member of our staff and became a cherished part of our close-knit group.

"He knew all of our regulars by name, chatted with them for hours, and was a beloved presence in the community where he grew up.

"He brought so much light to our team and will be dearly, dearly missed."

Police Scotland said it was alerted to the disturbance at about 3.05am on Sunday.

A second 19-year-old man was previously arrested in connection with the disturbance and released pending further enquiries.

Another man, aged 21, was also assaulted and sustained minor injuries during the incident.

A 20-year-old man has been charged in connection with this and is expected to appear before Glasgow Sheriff Court at a later date.

The force said enquiries "remain ongoing".

Detective Inspector Jonny MacKinnon said: "I would like to thank the public for their assistance with this investigation."
