Harry Kane penalty miss mars Ballon d'Or week with Bayern Munich plus Twente score NINE in the Euro Debrief

Welcome to The Euro Debrief, the Sky Sports column in which Adam Bate rounds up some of the key stories from the latest matches across the continent. This week:

  • Kane's miss on big night costs Bayern
  • Inter lose the derby to Amorim's Milan
  • Barcelona back on form with big win
  • PSG's 'reserves' top the table in France
  • Four for Weghorst as Twente score nine

Bundesliga: Kane's awkward night

It was all set up for Harry Kane to star for Bayern Munich in Der Klassiker against Borussia Dortmund. Instead, in his first appearance since winning the Ballon d'Or, his penalty miss proved costly as Fabio Silva snatched a point in the Allianz Arena.

It was a strange spectacle being in Munich at the weekend. The Bayern fans had a banner declaring Kane 'no showman, but a footballer as he should be' and yet the club understandably did feel compelled to put on a show in celebrating his individual prize.

When the line-ups appeared on the big screen before kick-off, Kane's avatar was in gold, clutching the Ballon d'Or. He came out separately to the tune of Land of Hope and Glory from Edward Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance March No.1 and gave a brief speech.

Kane has been open about being out of his comfort zone and for a man so meticulous in his preparation, one did wonder as he picked grass from the golden studs on the sole of his specially-made boots before his penalty whether all this has been a distraction.

What was impressive was that he is always willing to front up. After taking all of the plaudits this past week, there must have been a temptation to shy away from the questions after being largely culpable for two dropped points against Bayern's big rivals.

But there he was talking to the assembled media again afterwards, taking the responsibility for the draw. "We definitely had enough chances to win the game. Me on my own had enough chances to win the game, but it was not to be," he admitted.

"Obviously, today wasn't my best performance or the team's best performance but that's life, that's part of being a striker, being a footballer. I could have probably been out there for another hour today and the ball would not have gone in the back of the net.

"You have to take that on the chin sometimes." Not the way Kane would have wanted such a wonderful week to end, then, but a reminder of how this world can bite even the best on the backside. Expect him to bounce back but maybe without those gold boots.

If it was a disappointing weekend for the Bundesliga top scorer of the past three seasons, it was another good one for the man who is currently on course to take his crown this time around. Niclas Fullkrug scored again for Werder Bremen in a 2-0 win.

Hoffenheim became the seventh team in succession to fail to keep out the 33-year-old striker who is enjoying a spectacular renaissance in his second spell with the club. His team are up fifth in the table after Bayer Leverkusen were beaten at home to Stuttgart.

Bundesliga results: Elversberg 4-1 Mainz, Augsburg 1-2 Freiburg, Bayer Leverkusen 2-4 Stuttgart, Borussia Monchengladbach 0-0 Paderborn, Schalke 0-2 RB Leipzig, Werder Bremen 2-0 Hoffenheim, Bayern Munich 2-2 Borussia Dortmund, Union Berlin 1-1 Cologne, Eintracht Frankfurt 3-1 Hamburg.

LaLiga: Barcelona bounce back

Defeats to Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid will surely have been a blow to Barcelona's belief that they can beat the best under Hansi Flick but when it comes to tearing the rest of the teams apart there is no better outfit in European football.

Alaves copped for six goals at Camp Nou on Saturday with Raphinha and Lamine Yamal registering two apiece before Anthony Gordon came off the bench to score too. Barca have now scored 46 goals in 11 LaLiga games - on course for 159 in a 38-game season.

Real Madrid's win over Racing Santander was similarly routine as Kylian Mbappe, Jude Bellingham and Yan Diomande all scored in the first half. With Arda Guler impressing from the right, there is a growing feeling that this could be their best attacking quartet.

That might sound strange with Vinicius Junior absent but Diomande looks excellent playing from the left and has now scored or assisted in each of his last six games for the club. Has Jose Mourinho found his best combination? Awkward conversations ahead.

Atletico Madrid, meanwhile, are showing that there is more than one way to win football matches. Their 2-0 win away to Levante means that Diego Simeone's side have won seven games in a row now in LaLiga and stay two points behind Barcelona in second.

While Barca have scored more than twice as many goals as Atletico, it is Simeone's side who boast the best defensive record in the competition. Unstoppable forces, immovable objects and all that? We will know more when Atleti host Barca next Sunday.

That is the big game in LaLiga next weekend but this time around it was in Bilbao where Athletic Club took on Real Sociedad in the Basque Derby. The home side won 2-1 but it was not without controversy with Athletic lucky to get the deciding penalty.

It was amazing that VAR did not overturn the call against Jon Aramburu for a foul on Nico Williams when Williams himself did not think it was a penalty and Athletic boss Edin Terzic admitted things went their way. A disappointing way to decide a special fixture.

LaLiga results: Villarreal 0-1 Espanyol, Levante 0-2 Atletico Madrid, Rayo Vallecano 3-0 Celta Vigo, Real Betis 2-1 Malaga, Barcelona 6-1 Alaves, Getafe 3-1 Sevilla, Racing Santander 0-3 Real Madrid, Elche 0-1 Valencia, Athletic Club 2-1 Real Sociedad.

Serie A: Lazio clear at the top

Inter were beaten for the first time in Serie A this season in the showpiece game in Italy, losing the Derby della Madonnina to Milan. The 3-1 result is massive for Ruben Amorim and owed much to the efforts of Diego Moreira, their summer signing from Strasbourg.

Moreira scored the first free-kick by a Milan player in this Serie A fixture since Andrea Pirlo almost two decades ago and set up the other two goals. Milan did the double over Inter last season too and it did not deny their rivals the title but this could be different.

That is because Inter are three points adrift of leaders Lazio after Gennaro Gattuso's team came from behind to beat Cagliari in the Stadio Olimpico. The strange alchemy happening at Lazio continued as substitute Andrea Pinamonti headed in a late winner.

It is six consecutive wins now and, not for the first time this season, the underlying numbers suggested that Lazio did not have the best of the chances. But 10 games in and they are still undefeated - with Roma the only other side who can say the same.

Gian Piero Gasperini's side overwhelmed Udinese, winning 5-2 having been four up at half-time with Donyell Malen netting again. Roma are Serie A's top scorers. One way or another, the title could be going to the capital for the first time in a quarter of a century.

Serie A results: Bologna 2-1 Monza, Udinese 2-5 Roma, Milan 3-1 Inter, Como 1-0 Venezia, Frosinone 2-0 Torino, Lazio 2-1 Cagliari, Lecce 1-2 Genoa, Juventus 2-0 Napoli.

Ligue 1: Hakimi's hat-trick

It was not the best week in Ligue 1 for those hoping for a title race to emerge as Paris Saint-Germain provided an ominous reminder of their superiority. Yet another heavily rotated PSG line-up won 5-1 at Le Havre without many of their most famous names.

Achraf Hakimi was present and duly scored three goals as Luis Enrique's side made it nine wins out of nine in all competitions - including those European victories of Manchester City and Barcelona. They top the table in France after that early wobble.

Lille did at least score late through the veteran Olivier Giroud to stay within two points but Rennes conceded five times at Nice to lose ground. Cameron Archer found the net yet again for Auxerre but it was their only goal among the six scored in Strasbourg.

Marseille are up to sixth, while Paris FC were also big movers, beating Monaco 3-1 to leapfrog both them and Rennes into fourth. If Liam Rosenior secures Champions League football for next season it would be huge for the club and the rebuilding of his reputation.

Ligue 1 results: Le Havre 1-5 Paris Saint-Germain, Nice 5-2 Rennes, Lille 1-0 Lens, Troyes 2-0 Le Mans, Strasbourg 5-1 Auxerre, Lyon 2-0 Angers, Paris FC 3-1 Monaco, Marseille 2-0 Toulouse.

Elsewhere: Twente score NINE

The biggest win of the weekend on the continent belonged to FC Twente as they pumped Excelsior 9-0 away from home. Their hosts were down to 10 men for all but five minutes of the match but it is still a remarkable feat with Wout Weghorst scoring four.

Over in Portugal, Porto stay perfect at the top of the table with a comfortable victory that means they have won 10 out of 10 so far. Benfica and Sporting both won too, and a word for Sporting's Pedro Lima, once of Norwich, who scored his first league goal for the club.

A graduate of Palmeiras' academy, he also scored two on his full debut in midweek and is an interesting character having studied for a philosophy degree in Brazil. His 89-year-old grandmother was in the stands for his first start. And it has been some start indeed.
