Teenager drowns during Duke of Edinburgh's Award expedition in Wales

A teenager has drowned during a Duke of Edinburgh's Award trip in Wales.

Emergency services were called to Glasbury, Powys, on Tuesday evening after it was reported an 18-year-old had entered the River Wye and could not be found.

Dyfed-Powys Police said his body was located following a search including a mountain rescue team and the fire service.

A Duke of Edinburgh's Award spokeswoman has confirmed the teenager was on his award expedition when he died.

"Our thoughts are with the young person's family, together with all those who were taking part," she said.

"We will do everything we can to support them at this difficult time."

She said the scheme was "liaising closely with the young person's college and relevant authorities to understand how this tragic incident happened" and "offering our full support".

A spokeswoman for Dyfed-Powys Police had said: "A multi-agency operation has taken place at the River Wye in Glasbury this evening, following a report that an 18-year-old male had entered the water and could not be located.

"Dyfed-Powys Police, Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service, Mountain Rescue and the National Police Air Service have searched the area since the report was made at 6.30pm.

"Sadly, the body of a male has been located. Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones at this difficult time.

"Emergency services remain in the area and ask that members of the public stay away while enquiries continue."
