Yorkshire Coast Students Celebrate GCSE Results Success

There were tears of joy and laughter along the Yorkshire Coast as students eagerly collected their GCSE results today.

Filey School says it's GCSE results are a ‘testament to hard work’.

Head Teacher , Ms Britton, said:

"I would like to extend my congratulations to Filey School students as they collect their GCSE and BTEC results today. There have been some truly outstanding individual performances contributing to the positive performance of this year group as a whole.  I am extremely proud of all of our students, our staff and our supportive parents and carers who have worked tirelessly together, as a community, to ensure the successes recognised across the school today.

Today is about recognising the individual and collective challenge that the 2023 students have faced and celebrating their efforts, application, and performance to come through so well.  It is a testament to hard work that this year we celebrate much improved results for the young people of Filey School. There have certainly been some jumps from previous years and I have been delighted to share these achievements with so many of our young people and their families this morning.  "

North Yorkshire Council’s executive member for education, learning and skills, Cllr Annabel Wilkinson, said:

“Huge congratulations to all young people in North Yorkshire who have received their GCSE and equivalent results today.

“These results are an important testimony and a credit to our fantastic teachers who are so dedicated to our students, enabling them to achieve their very best.

“I wish all students every success with their next steps in life, wherever that may be. Their achievements are inspiration to the younger students.”

Lady Lumley’s school in Pickering say their students recorded exceptional individual performances this year with almost a quarter of students achieving 7-9 in at least half of their subjects. Clair Foden, Headteacher is keen that efforts of all students, parents and Lady Lumley’s staff are recognised saying:

‘Although sitting a full GCSE series, this year group had missed a significant period of learning through lockdown. Bucking the national trend which has seen 7-9 fall back towards 2019 figures, Lady Lumley’s students have excelled. The all-important English and Maths Standard pass, has also held up, taking students on to the next stage in their education and training.’ Lady Lumley’s School looks forward to welcoming students back to our Sixth Form to continue the excellent achievements of our outgoing Year 13.

Harry Monkman achieved 9 grade 9, 1 grade 8. Tilly Gospel achieved 5 grade 9, 2 grade 8, 2 grade 7 and a grade 5. Isaac Minguez Sweeney achieved 3 grade 9, 6 grade 8 and a grade 6, Esmee Bouzac – 3 grade 9, 5 grade 8, 1 grade 7 and a grade 6, Alfie Jones - 3 grade 9, 3 grade 8, 2 grade 7, 2 grade 6 and an A in the Free Standing Maths Qualification and Aaron Thorsby – 3 grade 9, 1 grade 8, 3 grade 7 and 3 grade 6. Harry Monkman and Alfie Jones also completed an additional and demanding ‘Free Standing Maths Qualification’ for which they gained an A grade.'

Dave Fairclough, Key Stage 4 Leader was keen to recognise the commitment and endeavour of this year group adding,

‘Above all though I am proud of the resilience and application of Year 11 who have overcome challenges academically and in the wider worlds, not least COVID 19 to achieve results worthy of the effort that they put in. It has been a real pleasure to facilitate their learning journey in and out of the classroom. Some of the progress made by individual students; Amelia Breckon, Lucy Tingay, Amelia Welford and Nathanael Magno to name a few was phenomenal.’

North Yorkshire Council’s corporate director for children and young people’s services, Stuart Carlton, praised students for their exam success. He said:

“Congratulations and well done to everyone who has taken their GCSE and equivalent examinations this year. I am delighted to see some excellent results that are well deserved.

“These results are not only a reflection of the hard work and commitment of our young people, but also their families, schools, colleges and other learning settings, that have supported them’.

“I wish all students every success as they move on to the next stage of their education, employment or training.

“Any young person still unsure about their next steps is encouraged to talk through their options with their family, school and careers adviser.”

Meanwhile, there’s more exam celebrations across the county as almost 50 adult learners collected their GCSE results from Adult Learning and Skills Service North Yorkshire.

Part of North Yorkshire Council, Adult Learning and Skills Service North Yorkshire offers GCSE qualifications to students who left school without achieving their English or maths GCSE.

This year’s grades saw 71 per cent of students achieving a Grade 4 or better in maths, while an impressive 80 per cent received a Grade 4 or better in English.

In East Yorkshire over 3,000 pupils across 18 secondary schools in the East Riding have received their results.

Mrs Parker-Randall, Headteacher at Bridlington School, said:

“We are very proud of our students’ achievements and look forward to celebrating with them as they collect their results today. Their results demonstrate a passion for and commitment to learning, qualities which will take them far in their next steps. Once again this year we are delighted to be offering record numbers of sixth form places to students. Now more than ever this is an exciting opportunity for students given our investment of £100K in new courses and ensuring our sixth form can access state of the art facilities. We wish all our students continued success as they embark on the next stage of their journeys.”

Mr Bolton, Director for Key Stage 4, said:

“It has been a pleasure to work with our Year 11 students over their two years and it has been fantastic to see them mature academically. With more students than ever choosing Bridlington Sixth Form, I look forward to seeing them progress further with us as they study a range of subjects varying from traditional A Levels to creative subjects such as Performing Arts and Fine Art, vocational pathways such as Business, Law, Criminogy to the new course Games Design. I wish all our Year 11s the very best on their next steps.”

This year the government have returned the grade boundaries in England to very similar levels to those in 2019, before the covid pandemic. Which East Riding Council says has resulted in less pupils achieving the top grades nationally, and initial results show it is the same picture in the East Riding.

Councillor Victoria Aitken, portfolio holder for children, families and education said:

“Congratulations to all of our pupils who have received their GCSE results today!

“We know that it has been a challenging few years for GCSE students because of the impact of the pandemic, but it’s great to see so many happy faces at our schools today.

“Once again, I’d like to extend thanks to the exceptional teaching staff we have across our schools who have supported pupils and families.

“I wish our young people lots of success in their futures, either in further education, training or into their chosen career.”
