Road user satisfaction on the A64 and across the Yorkshire and North East region has seen significant improvements over the last year, according to a new survey by the independent watchdog Transport Focus.
The A64 has been ranked eighteenth out of thirty-two major roads in England, as driver satisfaction across Yorkshire and the North East sees a significant boost.
According to the latest Strategic Roads User Survey by the independent watchdog Transport Focus, the A64 achieved an overall satisfaction score of 71 per cent for the 2025/26 period.
When broken down into specific categories, 71 per cent of drivers on the A64 were satisfied with their journey time. The road also scored well for its surface quality, with 77 per cent of users satisfied, while 80 per cent of drivers reported feeling safe while travelling on the route.
The results for the A64 reflect a broader trend of improvement across the Yorkshire and the North East region, which recorded some of the strongest gains of any area in the country.
Overall satisfaction in the region increased from 66 per cent last year to 72 per cent. Satisfaction with journey times rose from 65 per cent to 71 per cent, and road surface satisfaction improved from 71 per cent to 77 per cent.
These improvements have propelled Yorkshire and the North East from below the national average last year to joint second place for overall satisfaction among National Highways regions.
While the A64 performed solidly in the middle of the national rankings, the A19 was the standout performer for the region. The route was named the fifth best road in England, with 77 per cent of drivers satisfied overall.
Furthermore, the A19 achieved the highest road surface satisfaction score of any road in the country, with 84 per cent of drivers satisfied.
One driver who used the A19 told the survey:
"Road was at a good standard, no potholes, no roadworks and didn't get stuck in any major traffic."
Other major routes in the region saw mixed results. The A1(M) was placed twelfth with a 74 per cent overall satisfaction score, the A1 ranked twenty-third at 69 per cent, and the M62 placed twenty-sixth with 68 per cent.
Nationally, the survey asked more than 9,500 drivers about their last journey on a motorway or major 'A' road managed by National Highways. Across England, overall satisfaction increased to 71 per cent.
However, the management of roadworks remains one of the weaker performing areas, with only 50 per cent of drivers satisfied. The survey noted that drivers who passed through roadworks were significantly less satisfied with their overall journey, scoring 58 per cent, compared to 77 per cent for those who did not encounter any works.
Louise Collins, Director at Transport Focus, said:
"It's encouraging to see drivers in Yorkshire and the North East reporting a better experience across several key measures this year. Overall satisfaction, journey time and road surface satisfaction have all improved, while the A19 continues to perform strongly and is one of the highest-rated roads in England.
These results show that positive improvements to the road user experience are possible. They also underline the importance of making sure those improvements are felt consistently across the network.
With a major programme of renewals ahead, National Highways has a clear opportunity to build on what works well and keep disruption to a minimum."
The survey findings come as National Highways prepares for a major five-year renewals programme as part of its third Road Investment Strategy. This programme is expected to result in road users facing an increased number of roadworks.
In response, Transport Focus is calling on National Highways to help drivers plan ahead, avoid unnecessary delays, and ensure that road users fully understand what is happening before and during any roadworks.
