Yorkshire Coast by Rail Exhibition Arrives at Scarborough Station

Scarborough station has opened its doors to a new heritage exhibition celebrating the golden age of seaside holidays.

“The Yorkshire Coast by Rail” exhibition has launched in the station’s historic Old Parcels Office (OPO), developed in partnership with the Yorkshire Coast Community Rail Partnership and OPO Artspace.

The event forms part of the nationwide Railway 200 celebrations – a year-long, partnership-led campaign marking 200 years of the modern railway, that aims to inspire a new generation of pioneering young talent to choose a career in rail.

Running Thursdays through Sundays between 5th and 21st September, the free exhibition brings to life the story of the railway’s arrival on the Yorkshire Coast.

Visitors can explore vintage photographs, stories, memorabilia, model engines, artefacts, and original tickets, along with a specially illustrated booklet.

In addition, guided tours and dedicated school sessions are being offered to help bring the history of the railway to life for different audiences.

Funded by Community Rail Network, Northern, and £2,000 support from  TransPennine Express (TPE), the exhibition is expected to attract more than 1,200 visitors.

The exhibition is set to highlight how the railway has evolved and the role it has played in transforming communities along the Yorkshire Coast.

Andrew Watkins, Community & Development Manager at TransPennine Express, said:

“Scarborough’s railway heritage is something to be celebrated, and this exhibition does a brilliant job of bringing that history to life.

"We’re delighted to support a project that gives people the chance to discover how the railway has influenced the Yorkshire Coast and the communities it serves.”

Rachel Osborne, Community Rail Officer for the Yorkshire Coast Community Rail Partnership, added:

“We are really pleased to be partnering with the Old Parcels Offices for this exhibition and hope that it will be enjoyed by all who visit it.”
