We could be waking up to snow and ice in places on Tuesday morning.
The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for snow and ice across parts of North and East Yorkshire, starting Monday evening, 18 November 2024, and lasting into Tuesday morning. While the likelihood of significant impact is low, the warning advises residents to be prepared for potential travel disruptions and icy conditions.
The most disruptive scenario, although uncertain, involves 5 to 10 cm of snow settling at lower elevations, particularly across parts of Yorkshire and Derbyshire. Higher ground above 200 meters is expected to see accumulations of 5 to 10 cm, potentially reaching 15 to 20 cm above 300 meters.
Potential impacts of this weather event include:
Travel delays on roads, possibly stranding vehicles and passengers
Delays or cancellations to rail and air travel
Injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces
Power cuts and disruption to mobile phone coverage
Isolation of some rural communities
The Met Office advises residents to take the following precautions:
Plan routes in advance, checking for road closures and travel delays
Allow extra time for journeys and prepare vehicles for winter conditions
Pack essential items in case of delays, such as warm clothing, food, water, and a phone charger
Be prepared for potential power cuts by gathering torches, batteries, and other necessities
Stay informed about weather updates and potential changes to the warning.
