Winning Designs Revealed in Scarborough Road Safety Banner Competition

Budding young artists across the Scarborough area have been recognised for their creative flare and dedication to promoting road safety in a competition among schools.

Primary schools were invited to design striking banners that promote road safety messages, from raising awareness of children crossing the road to parking responsibly.

More than 300 entries were received from six schools, with the winning designs from each school to be displayed at all 24 schools across Scarborough.

Those taking part were Barrowcliff School, Filey Junior School, Friarage Community Primary School, Gladstone Road Primary School, Seamer and Irton Community Primary School, and Lindhead School.

The competition was run by Scarborough Community Safety Hub, linked with North Yorkshire Community Safety Partnership as part of North Yorkshire Council.

This was in conjunction with the York and North Yorkshire Road Safety Partnership, which sees local authorities, emergency services and other agencies work together to reduce the number of people killed and injured on the county’s roads.

North Yorkshire Council’s executive member for community safety, Cllr Heather Phillips, said:

“We would like to thank the schools and pupils for producing such eye-catching designs for the banner competition, and a huge congratulations to the winners.

“The winning designs will be displayed on fences and buildings of schools in the area to raise awareness of road safety and responsible parking.

“The initiative is part of the partnership’s wider efforts to improve road safety, reduce casualties and promote safer communities for families and children.”

The winning designs were chosen by a panel of community safety officers and North Yorkshire Police officers.

Rural Police Community Support Officer, Anna Wilkinson, said:

“We are committed to keeping our roads safe, especially around schools where protecting children and their families is a top priority.

“Children from local primary schools in the Scarborough area have designed some fantastic road safety posters for the competition, and their imagination has helped to drive a serious message about keeping our roads safe outside of schools.

“Through their posters, we have been able to deliver the message that road safety starts with awareness and awareness starts young.”

Flamingo Land, the Sea Life Scarborough Aquarium, the Filey Bird Garden and Animal Park, North Yorkshire Water Park, and the Secret Realm soft play centre donated prizes for the winners.

Year 4 student Freya Hammerton from Filey Junior School was the winner of the banner competition, with headteacher Michael Taylor wishing “a huge well done to everyone involved”.

He said:

“This competition highlights how important road safety is, and how the school and children are both committed to ensuring that everyone in our community is safe when using the surrounding roads.

“All of the entries that were received were amazing and it really was difficult to pick just one. The children had so much fun creating their posters.

“It was such a privilege to award Freya her certificate and prize for her wonderful creativity and detail in her entry.”
