Whitby's WHISH charity has been awarded The King’s Award for Voluntary Service (KAVS), the highest award given to local volunteer groups across the United Kingdom.
Equivalent to an MBE, this prestigious accolade recognises outstanding work by volunteer organisations that benefit their communities.
WHISH is a parent-led small charity which is completely self-funded, we support over 200 children & young people in the Whitby & Esk Valley rural area who have a disability, Special Educational Need or Hidden Impairment (HI).
Volunteers are at the heart of WHISH. The charity was founded by volunteers and continues to be run by a team of dedicated volunteer Trustees today. They say:
"It is not just the Trustees — each and every volunteer plays a vital role in helping WHISH continue their work every day, supporting the families and young people. WHISH simply could not deliver the amazing range of activities and support provided without their ongoing commitment, passion, and generosity. Their time and energy make everything possible, and this award is a tribute to their invaluable contribution.
Participating in WHISH activities enhances the health and well-being of the young people, and improves confidence and self-esteem, giving children with disabilities and impairments an opportunity to do things like their peers, to access activities most children can take for granted, learning and having fun together."
WHISH Chairman, Steve Bremner, added:
"We are truly honoured to receive this award. It means a great deal to be recognised for helping young people and their families in our community. We share this with everyone who makes our charity what it is: our brilliant staff and volunteers, the parents who support us, and our partners and funders who believe in what we do. We can’t wait to continue help make a positive difference to young people with disabilities."
Representatives of WHISH will receive the award crystal and certificate from Lord-Lieutenant of North Yorkshire, in early 2026. Two representatives from the group will also be invited to attend a royal garden party at Buckingham Palace or The Palace of Holyroodhouse in 2026.
