The Yorkshire Coast is bracing itself for intense rainfall, strong winds and dangerous waves as storm Babet hits.
The Met Office has issued two weather warnings for the Yorkshire Coast, with the first in force from 6:00pm today until 6:00am on Saturday:
Having pushed north across the warning area early on Thursday, a band of heavy and persistent rain is expected to slowly edge back southwards across northern England later on Thursday, lasting into Saturday in some areas. 20-40 mm is expected to fall quite widely, though some parts of the North York Moors and Yorkshire Dales could pick up 50-70 mm. Strong easterly winds may exacerbate the impacts brought about by the heavy rain.
The second weather warning is for strong winds and is in force from 12:00pm on Friday until 12:00pm on Saturday:
Coastal easterly gales, accompanied by gusts of 40 to 60 mph are likely to renew (in the south of the area) or continue (in the north of the area), extending a short way inland and affecting other higher ground areas inland too. These will be accompanied by large waves and dangerous coastal conditions. Winds are expected to ease through Saturday.
