Thousands of visitors are expected to line Scarborough's South Bay this weekend as the popular illuminated Goldwing motorcycle parade returns to raise funds for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance.
Thousands of spectators are expected to line Scarborough's South Bay seafront this weekend as the popular Goldwing Light Parade returns to the town.
The free community event will take place on Saturday the 12th of September, bringing together motorcycle enthusiasts and families from across the country. The dazzling spectacle raises thousands of pounds each year for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance service.
Historically, the popular gathering has attracted as many as 12,000 people to the coast, providing a significant boost to the local area while supporting the vital emergency medical charity.
Approximately one hundred Goldwing motorcycles, decorated with spectacular neon and LED lighting, will form the centrepiece of the event. The illuminated machines will initially be on display for the public on Scarborough Pier between noon and 4pm.
The main illuminated procession will then get underway at 8pm. Riders travelling from across the country will navigate a specific route along the coast, travelling via Spa Bridge, Foreshore Road, and Marine Drive before reaching Peasholm Gap and finally returning to the pier.
To ensure public safety during the large-scale event, several road closures and traffic restrictions will be in place along the seafront. Foreshore Road, Sandside, and Eastborough, from Globe Street to the seafront, will be closed from 7.30pm until 10pm.
Furthermore, Marine Drive and Royal Albert Drive will be subject to rolling closures from 7.30pm until approximately 8.45pm to allow the parade of motorcycles to pass safely.
However, the traditional fireworks display at the end of the parade will not go ahead this year. Organisers confirmed the cancellation is due to safety concerns and aligns with government advice following a recent spate of devastating wildfires across the country.
Organiser Danielle Scott is coordinating the procession for the fourth time and is anticipating a memorable evening. She said:
"This year marks my fourth year organising the parade, and I'm incredibly excited for what promises to be another fantastic event. Preparations are coming together really well for what will be a spectacular display of lights along Scarborough's beautiful seafront. Visitors can expect bikes decorated with lights galore, music, and even the occasional fancy dress costume, creating a fun and vibrant atmosphere for all ages."
Executive member for arts and culture, Councillor Simon Myers, highlighted the importance of the event for the local area. He said:
"Events such as this play an important role in attracting visitors to our coast and boosting the local economy. The combination of the illuminated motorcycles and entertainment creates a spectacle that helps showcase Scarborough as a vibrant destination and raises vital funds for the air ambulance’s work. We look forward to welcoming visitors from across the region and beyond."
