The Stephen Joseph Theatre (SJT) in Scarborough has unveiled 'Propel', a substantial new creative careers programme designed for young people aged 15 to 17.
The innovative initiative aims to provide aspiring creatives in the Scarborough area with a unique, free opportunity to gain hands-on industry experience across all aspects of theatrical work.
The programme has already garnered high-profile support from local figures, including the theatre’s patron, actor James Norton, and local politician Alison Hume MP.
Propel is scheduled to run on fixed days between January and July 2026. It will offer participants insights into the vast breadth of creative careers available within the theatre world.
Backing from Established Figures
James Norton, who attributes his initial interest in acting to his own work experience at the SJT in the early 2000s, expressed his enthusiasm for the project. Norton asserted that the SJT has consistently ensured local young people have access to creative opportunities. “I am thrilled to be supporting Propel and look forward to seeing the next generation of talent Scarborough has to offer,” Norton said.
Similarly, Alison Hume MP welcomed the launch, noting her personal connection to the sector, having been a screenwriter before entering politics. As MP for Scarborough and Whitby, Ms Hume stated she has "never ceased to be amazed by the talent in this sector within our community". She believes initiatives like Propel will provide brilliant young people in the area with access to the creative industries, helping them “fulfil their creative potential”.
A Unique Industry Insight
SJT Artistic Director Paul Robinson emphasised the theatre's dedication to assisting others in securing creative roles. “At the SJT, we know how lucky we are to have jobs we love,” Mr Robinson said, adding that the team is “delighted to offer this innovative and free opportunity to young people committed to a career in the creative industries”.
Propel provides comprehensive industry experience spanning every theatrical department. This includes production, engagement, and marketing. The initiative is not solely focused on industry-based learning, however; it also offers participants the chance to explore their own creative preferences, become part of the wider theatre network, and learn more about theatre generally.
Successful applicants are set to receive significant benefits, going far beyond typical work experience. They will receive exclusive access, including ticket discounts and coveted invitations to press nights. Participants will be handed a comprehensive programme pack and a backstage pass, allowing them to explore the inner workings of the entire building.
This immersive experience will cover diverse areas, from technical wizardry and marketing magic to design meetings and secret fundraising plans. Participants will be actively encouraged to immerse themselves in as much work as possible, encompassing both in-house triumphs and thrilling visiting shows, thereby fuelling their passion for the arts. This journey will be expertly guided by Lisa Chapman, the SJT’s dedicated Assistant Producer.
How to Apply
Propel is a free programme. Application is made via a simple online form. The deadline for submissions is 11.45pm on 31 December 2025.
- The programme is free of charge.
