Did you know that in 2026 it will be 400 years since spa waters were first discovered in Scarborough, making it one of the first seaside resorts in the UK?
To mark this special anniversary Animated Objects have been running a design competition for young people aged 8-18 to create a logo to celebrate the town.
More than 800 entries were submitted from which a panel of judges produced a shortlist of ten finalists you can see here.
Lee Threadgold, from Animated Objects explained more about the competition:
"We invited more than three and a half thousand young people to put entries in. More than 800 of them sent some fantastic drawings back and then we've been through three rounds of judging to get it down to 10 finalists. And what we're inviting the public to do is to vote for their favourite across the course of August.
"So there are 10 shortlisted designs. There's some spectacular designs and sadly, they couldn't all make it into a manageable list for the public to vote upon. But the 10 shortlisted finalists are absolutely thrilled. We saw them just before the end of the school term. The voting is going to be open until the 26th of August and then we'll do the count up and we will let the kids know, obviously, the winning designer, before we then release it to the public, in September to let them know which one has been chosen."
The winning design will be chosen by public vote between now and the 26th August. Red voting boxes can be found at the following locations:
- Scarborough Library & Information Centre
- Eastfield Library & Information Centre
- Scalby & Newby Library
- Scarborough Market Hall
- Gallows Close Centre
- Scarborough Spa (inside Farrer’s Bar)
Lee explained what they'll do with the winning entry:
"It will be used at different events throughout the course of the year. We'll certainly be making some flags with it. If we get the chance, we might have a go at doing a giant sea giant sand art of it as well. It will be a design that people become very familiar with and we're wanting to get the word out there that this big anniversary is coming up as well.
"It's about celebrating where we all live and we all have an opinion on that, on how things are in the place where we live and. One of the things we've been asking people when they vote as well both in person or on the email, is if there's something you really love about Scarborough, just jot that down along with your vote as well, because it's really interesting to find out the different things that people love about our lovely little town here on the coast."
You can vote online by emailing animatedobjects@mac.com and messages must include your first name and postcode.
Also please add a short sentence saying what you love about or a favourite memory of Scarborough for the vote to count.
The winning design will be announced in September.
