Scarborough Theatre Cast Build Own Set to Beat Financial Challenges

The Cast of a new stage show in Scarborough has taken the unusual step of building their own set.

Little Shop of Horrors opens at the YMCA theatre tonight.

Director, Katie Doubtfire, says the cast took things literally into their own hands, to help make the show financially viable.

"Unfortunately the YMCA has found itself in slight financial difficulties. So with that, we have actually constructed the set from scratch ourselves.

So everything that you will see, bar the plants - they have been hired, but apart from that, everything you will see, we have made ourselves in-house because with the financial difficulties, we couldn't outsource for this set design.

So we have stripped it right back in terms of set. But everything has been handcrafted by our young people.

It's their artwork. It is them that have put the effort into this. it looks incredible."

The Theatre's latest stage show boasts two complete casts after the community theatre group was "overwhelmed with talent" when it opened auditions for Little Shop of Horrors.

Director, Katie Doubtfire, says it was a nice problem to have.

"During the audition process, we had so much talent on display that we made the decision to actually double cast the production.

The thing is with this script is it's quite condensed. There are only actually eight roles within the script. We had nearly 60 people audition, so we were like, okay, how can we make this so that more people get more of a chance to shine in these roles.

So we have a set of young people who are called Team Rose, and then we have a set of young people who are called Team Violet, so they're taking on the different nights each week.

Team Violet, take on Tuesdays and Team Row take on Wednesdays because we simply could not make the decision between them because they were all just so fantastic."

Little Shop of Horrors is a cult classic musical that blends rock, doo-wop, and Motown with "outrageous comedy and unforgettable characters".

The story follows meek florist Seymour as he discovers "a mysterious plant with a sinister secret—and a powerful appetite".

The show runs at Scarborough's YMCA Theatre on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings from July 29th to August 27th with performances at 7:30pm.
