Scarborough Station Gateway Investment Could be Catalyst for Rail Improvements

There are hopes that Scarborough's Station gateway project will have an impact on future government planning for the rail network.

Both the Borough Council and County Council are applying for levelling up funding to help rejuvenate the area around Scarborough's train station.

Borough Council leader Steve Siddons says rail connectivity to the town needs to be kept on the Government's radar, following the confirmation  that an electrification project on the northern rail network will only run to York.

The plan to improve journey times on parts of the norths rail network by electrifying parts of the line won't directly benefit Scarborough.

The electrification work is going to improve journey times between Manchester and York, but the upgrade work wont be extended to Scarborough.

However, Borough Councillor Janet Jefferson thinks the planned investment in the towns station gateway project may help Scarborough get on the map for future rail upgrades.

The Transpennine Route Upgrade is a multi-billion pound, transformative, long-term railway infrastructure programme that will improve connectivity in the North. It will see major investment to be made to the railway between York and Manchester via Leeds and Huddersfield with the installation of additional tracks in places along with electrification of some lines.

The latest phase of works was approved by the government on June 30th and will see upgrades made to stretches of the line in West Yorkshire.
