Scarborough is welcoming music lovers for the highly anticipated return of its annual jazz festival this weekend
The long running festival is described as a "celebration of musical excellence" and promises an "unforgettable weekend of rhythm, melody, improvisation and innovation".
This year marks the 22nd anniversary of the event and the second year with Mark Gordon as festival director. Organisers describe the Scarborough Jazz Festival as one of the UK's most prominent jazz festivals, celebrating its legacy by featuring an eclectic mix of renowned artists and emerging talent from across the UK.
The 2025 line-up is set to showcase a diverse range of jazz styles, from classic swing and bebop to contemporary fusion and avant-garde improvisation, ensuring there is "something for every jazz enthusiast".
The main stage acts will include performances from the James Taylor Quartet, Alan Barnes’ Works of Art, the Emma Rawicz Jazz Orchestra, and Joe Stilgoe & The Entertainers.
Other notable performers are the Simon Spillett Big Band playing Tubby Hayes, the Ben Holder Quartet, and the Shirley Smart Trio.
Performances will primarily be held in the Spa Grand Hall, a venue noted for its excellent acoustics and intimate atmosphere. The festival experience extends beyond the main stage, with free performances scheduled in several locations. Festival-goers can enjoy live music with views of the North Sea in the Sun Court, while Farrer’s Bar will host late-night parties and the Jazz Café will feature the Al Morrison Trio.
The festival programme suggests that the town of Scarborough itself, with its Victorian architecture and coastal scenery, provides the "perfect backdrop for this cultural extravaganza". Attendees are encouraged to explore local landmarks, such as Scarborough Castle, or its sandy beaches during their visit.
Organisers promise that the Scarborough Jazz Festival 2025 will be a "celebration of musical mastery, community spirit, and seaside charm". They are extending an invitation to both lifelong jazz aficionados and curious newcomers to immerse themselves in what they describe as the "joyous and transformative world of jazz".
