Scarborough Care Worker Praised for Medical Emergency Response

A Care Assistant from local home care provider has been praised after saving the life of a man who was suffering a heart attack on the street.

The night of 7th October began as usual for Bluebird Care Scarborough & Bridlington Care Assistant Rebecca Moor, as she attended a routine care visit for one of the many customers she provides vital care and support to within the community.

However, this quickly changed, as shortly after her departure from her customer’s home she witnessed a man collapse just outside Plaxton Court, Scarborough.

While some may have panicked in the situation, Rebecca immediately went over to aid the stricken member of the public, displaying incredible calmness and composure in what was a life-or-death situation.

Having worked in the care sector for most of her life, Rebecca instinctively knew to assess the man’s situation and initiate her well-drilled training.

“I saw the gentleman collapse, so I ran to him and saw he was in cardiac arrest. Thanks to the training with our Registered Nurses, I knew exactly what to do.

“I initially attempted the CPR process, and then after a short while I shouted for further help. Thankfully a person who was working at Plaxton Court came out with a defibrillator. I did not panic or hesitate and proceeded to use the defibrillator as well as continuing CPR, which I sustained until the ambulance arrived.”

Several days after the incident, a member of the team at Plaxton Court contacted the Bluebird Care Scarborough & Bridlington office to thank Rebecca and inform her that the man was alive, and that she had saved his life.

Reflecting on her heroic act, Rebecca said:

“Adrenalin and my training certainly kicked in at the time! I must say I did cry my eyes out afterwards. I am so relieved he’s still here!”

Rebecca had received CPR training from Bluebird Care Scarborough & Bridlington during her induction process, something that is refreshed yearly. In addition to CPR and defibrillation training, she has developed an expert understanding in moving and handling, medication, safeguarding, basic life support training, and more, which all forms part of the home care providers induction program.

Speaking about Rebecca, Debbie Ferguson, Head of Nursing at Bluebird Care Scarborough & Bridlington, said:

“I am very proud to say that I trained Rebecca and from the sounds of it she did a fantastic job! Well done to her - we are so proud!”

Tracey Tonge, Office Administrator at the home care provider, added:

“We at the Scarborough office are so proud of her, she is a true hero.”
