The next phase of repairs to a community football pitch at Scarborough Sports Village is set to get under way next week to bring the venue back into use.
North Yorkshire Council has committed to securing the long-term future of the pitch at the home ground of Scarborough Athletic Football Club and Scarborough Ladies Football Club by supporting a programme of repairs.
A site survey conducted last year highlighted issues with the 3G pitch which need to be addressed before the new surface is laid.
As a result, the pitch is unavailable for competitive fixtures for the current 2025/26 season leading to Scarborough Athletic playing all their home games in Bridlington. The council has committed to ensuring the repairs are completed in time for competitive matches to resume in August this year for the start of next season.
A construction company, Willmott Dixon, will carry out the repairs to remedy the pitch defects and ensure a stable base in preparation for the new surface to be put in place.
Work started last month (January) to remove the current playing surface to prepare for the actual repairs to be undertaken. The next phase that is due to be overseen by Wilmott Dixon will see the necessary works undertaken before a new pitch surface can be laid.
Equipment will be brought on site ahead of work starting next week. It is expected that this phase will take between eight and 10 weeks to complete before the new pitch surface will be put in place ahead of the start of the next football season in the summer.
North Yorkshire Council’s executive member for leisure, Cllr Simon Myers, said:
“This is a major step forward to securing the future of the pitch and bringing it back into use.
“This is a very important sports facility for our communities and all the fans of the football clubs, and we are committed to making sure that the pitch is back in use as soon as possible.”
Willmott Dixon director Chris Yates said:
“Scarborough Sports Village is an important facility for the local community, and we are pleased to be working with North Yorkshire Council to deliver the necessary works to bring the pitch back into use. We look forward to completing the project ahead of the new season.”
Scarborough Athletics' board issued an update to fans stating:
"The club is pleased to announce that North Yorkshire Council (NYC) have now confirmed that their contractor, Wilmott Dixon, will commence the next important phase of works on the pitch replacement project at the Scarborough Sports Village this coming Monday, 2nd March.
This marks a significant milestone in facilitating our return home.
NYC have indicated that this next phase of necessary works will take between 8 and 10 weeks which will then allow the new surface to be re-laid in the Summer ahead of the 2026/27 football season.
Please be assured that once we have any further information we will continue to share it and thank you for your ongoing support."
While the pitch is unavailable, Scarborough Athletic is playing its home fixtures at Bridlington Town’s ground during the 2025/26 season. The temporary ground share agreement was approved last year by the National League and the Northern Premier League.
