The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) has announced a volunteer vacancy for the role of Launch Authority at its Scarborough Lifeboat Station, one of the oldest operational stations in the country.
The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) Lifeboat Station in Scarborough is actively seeking a dedicated volunteer to join its existing team as a Launch Authority, a role critical to saving lives at sea. This significant position is open for applications until 19 October 2025.
Scarborough boasts a rich history as one of the RNLI’s oldest operational stations, having been founded in 1801. The station, which unveiled a new, state-of-the-art lifeboathouse on 27 November 2016, currently operates both a Shannon class all-weather lifeboat and a D class inshore lifeboat. The station’s volunteer crews, headed by the Lifeboat Operations Manager and supported by Shore Crew, have been recognised with 35 awards for gallantry.
The Role of Launch Authority: Ensuring Constant Readiness
The RNLI underscores the profound impact of this volunteer position, stating that it "will help us save lives at sea by carrying out the day to day management of the lifeboat station to ensure a permanent state of readiness for service".
Key responsibilities for the Launch Authority include authorising the launch of lifeboats in accordance with current procedures. Furthermore, in the absence of the Lifeboat Operations Manager or when delegated, the Launch Authority is tasked with ensuring all operational activities are conducted to maintain the lifeboats and associated equipment in a constant state of readiness. The role also involves leading the operations team and representing them on the Lifeboat Management Group. This commitment is variable, with weekly requirements.
Qualifications and Commitment
The RNLI is looking for individuals who are strong team players with excellent communication and leadership skills. Local maritime knowledge is a required attribute, while IT literacy and knowledge of the RNLI are desirable. Prospective volunteers must be between 18 and 70 years of age and reside or work within 15 minutes of the Scarborough station. The role also requires compliance with the RNLI Volunteer Commitment and Volunteer Code of Conduct.
A spokesperson for the charity affirmed the RNLI's commitment to safeguarding, stating, "The RNLI is committed to safeguarding; protecting a person’s health, wellbeing, and human rights, enabling them to live free from harm, abuse, and neglect". Successful applicants will be required to demonstrate an awareness and understanding of safeguarding policy and complete an online safeguarding training module upon commencement. Relevant criminal record checks will also be carried out as part of the recruitment process.
Benefits and Organisational Values
Volunteers for this crucial role will join a motivated and enthusiastic team within an inclusive and diverse organisation. The RNLI highlights that volunteers will have the satisfaction of giving back to the community, meet new people, and gain valuable skills and experience. Comprehensive training will be provided, and reasonable out-of-pocket expenses will be reimbursed.
The charity encourages applications from individuals who share its core values of being trustworthy, courageous, selfless, and dependable, aligning with the RNLI's overarching vision: "To save Every One".
