Shortly after 8.30am on Thursday, Police received a report of a suspected World War Two unexploded device found at an outbuilding in Staxton.
Officers attended to the address and informed the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD).
A cordon was put in place as a precaution while EOD removed the device from the area. The device was then transported to a safe location where a controlled explosion took place at approximately 12.30pm.
The cordon is now stood down.
North Yorkshire Police added:
'We would like to thank the public for their patience whilst we dealt with this incident.'
