The North Yorkshire Moors Railway has launched an exclusive YouTube members channel, offering enthusiasts unique access to the heritage line while raising vital funds for the registered charity that keeps the steam running.
The North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NYMR), a much-loved staple of the region, has launched a dedicated YouTube members channel, creating a vital new stream of funding while offering enthusiasts unique access to the running of the historic line.
The new initiative allows supporters worldwide to "View the NYMR from your own home", offering an opportunity to "Experience the magic of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway like never before". For only £1.99 per month, subscribers unlock access to up to eight additional live streaming cameras.
Paul Middleton, Director of Mechanical Engineering at the NYMR, highlighted the unique content stream this channel provides for supporters across the globe.
Mr Middleton stated:
“This is a great opportunity to support the railway and view some excellent content of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway.
There's going to be the live streaming cameras, so you'll get access to many cameras across the railway to see the engines working across the beautiful North Yorkshire Moors. There'll be historical content put on there from our archives of of of years gone by of the engines, and that'll be updated as we find and get that content and edit it.
There'll also be live events that we'll be filming, and we're also even going to have a go at putting cameras in cabs, so, you'll be able to see what it's like on the foot plate.”
The new selection of station and lineside streaming cameras allow viewers to enjoy the "sights and sounds" of the heritage railway from anywhere. Whether viewers wish to follow "a busy day at Grosmont Station, the curves at Darnholm, or a peaceful moment along Levisham straight," the new cameras bring the railway to life.
Paul Middleton also emphasised that the channel will be a constantly evolving experience for its members:
“So, this is a great opportunity to be able to see new things, get exclusive content, all from the comfort of your own home while supporting the NYMR.
So, a bit like when you travel on the railway, this is a journey and we're going to develop and try new things out on the channel.
There's going to be the live streaming cameras, there'll be historical content put on there from our archives. You get some good content and we get the support. It's really, really important.”
Securing the Future of Steam
The subscription service serves as a crucial fundraising effort for the North Yorkshire Moors Railway Trust, a registered charity (#501388) that operates largely through the dedication of its volunteers.
The subscription fee goes directly towards preserving the line and securing its operational future. Specifically, the funds generated contribute to:
- Supporting volunteer-led heritage operations.
- Maintaining and expanding the new camera network.
- Keeping the steam railway running for years to come.
The NYMR stressed that without public support, the charity would find it "impossible to maintain our historic locomotives, restore our heritage carriages, and keep our stations looking as they did in the golden age of steam". By becoming a YouTube Member, it says subscribers are "directly helping to secure the future of one of the world’s most popular heritage railways".
While the majority of the new footage is exclusive to members, the NYMR confirmed that the popular Goathland Bank camera will remain free to view, allowing all visitors to "continue to enjoy the locomotives working up the 1 in 49 bank".
The organisation invites the public to "Join as a YouTube Member today and be part of the railway, wherever you are!".
