Night of Action Targets Night Poaching in Rural East Riding
A collaborative effort between the Rural Task Force (RTF), the local FarmWatch community, and the Humberside Police Special Constabulary took place last night to combat the rising issue of night poaching in the rural areas surrounding Driffield and Bridlington.
This operation aimed to disrupt illegal activities that have been increasingly reported in the region.
The RTF highlighted a concerning trend of "lamping," where vehicles, particularly 4x4s, traverse fields and crops, causing significant damage while using high-powered lamps to spotlight wildlife such as hares, deer, and badgers, which are then pursued by dogs.
The RTF stated, "We are starting to see an increase in lamping," emphasizing the negative impact this practice has on local agriculture and wildlife.
Thanks to the vigilant efforts of FarmWatch spotters, the operation was able to disrupt at least one suspected poaching vehicle. Authorities noted that inquiries would continue in collaboration with colleagues from North Yorkshire Police to ensure that appropriate actions are taken against these illegal activities.
The RTF urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspected night poaching incidents. For immediate concerns, they advised contacting emergency services at 999, while non-emergency incidents can be reported at 101.
