New Artisan Market And Locals Guide Set To Boost Scarborough Economy

A new monthly artisan market and the first local guidebook in three decades are being launched to revitalise Scarborough's town centre economy.

A fresh initiative aimed at growing the town centre economy in Scarborough is underway, featuring a brand new artisan market and the publication of a comprehensive local guide.

Toby Hyam, representing the organisation This Is Scarborough, has outlined a dual approach to revitalising the coastal town. The strategy includes gathering baseline data to understand the local economic landscape and creating tangible attractions and resources to draw people into the area.

As part of the push to highlight the town's offerings, the group published an illustrated map last year, which currently has four thousand copies in distribution. Building on this success, they are now releasing a new book titled 'The Locals Guide'.

According to the organisers, this publication marks a significant milestone for the town, as it is the first new guide to Scarborough to be published in thirty years. The book promises to share local secrets and highlight special places that visitors and residents alike can enjoy, with the ultimate goal of showcasing just how much the town has to offer.

Toby said:

"We're interested in data, so we've produced some baseline data, but we're also interested in growing the town centre economy. So we've created a illustrated map which we published last year. We've got 4,000 out in distribution at the moment. We're publishing a new book which is the first time a new guide to Scarborough has been published for 30 years. It's called The Locals Guide and it's got loads of local secrets, special places in Scarborough. I want people to look at Scarborough and say there's a lot to do here. It's an interesting place to come and, and I think we can make more stuff happen here. So I'm really positive about it."

In addition to the new literature, This Is Scarborough is launching a regular event to bring footfall back to the town's historic trading areas. The Coble Market is set to launch on the twelfth of April and will take place on the second Sunday of every month.

The artisan market will be situated on St Helen's Square, located directly opposite the existing market. The chosen location holds deep historical significance, serving as the original medieval marketplace for Scarborough.

The new Sunday morning market promises a laid-back atmosphere, featuring quality coffee, good food, and a wide variety of local artisans and craftspeople. Organisers have also ensured that the event will be family-friendly, offering free activities for children alongside the artisan goods available for purchase.

Toby added:

"Coble Market is the second Sunday of every month from the 12th of April and it's an artisan market on a Sunday morning, laid back vibe, good coffee, good food, great artisans and craftspeople working there and stuff for the kids to do free stuff to do as well as stuff to buy. It's going to be on St Helen's Square right opposite the market. Now that is the medieval marketplace for Scarborough. That is where markets should happen and we're going to bring that market back to Scarborough."

The combined efforts of introducing 'The Locals Guide' and establishing the Cobble Market represent a concerted effort to showcase the abundance of activities and attractions available in Scarborough, whilst actively supporting the growth of the town centre economy.
