More Groups To Have a Say in How Scarborough's £20m Government Windfall is Spent

Scarborough is set to receive just under £20 million in funding as part of the government’s Plan for Neighbourhoods and the town's MP says more local people will be involved in deciding how it is spent.

Scarborough will receive £2 million a year for the next ten years. The funding is part of a wider investment of £1.5 billion in communities across the United Kingdom, with 75 towns, including Scarborough, set to benefit.

Scarborough and Whitby MP, Alison Hume, says the money will be managed by a local board and will be available for a wide range of local development projects.

A new Neighbourhood Board will be established in Scarborough, replacing the local Town Board, to implement a new vision for the area. The new board will include residents, local businesses, and grassroots campaigners. Alison Hume says the new board will have a wider remit and membership.

The previous Town Board was formed to help develop plans to spend the £20m that had been promised by the last government. That board had already carried a great deal of work identifying suitable projects and submitting applications to government. Alison Hume says that while some of those projects may be carried forward there is an opportunity to reconsider what the money is used for.

The new Neighbourhood Board will decide how to spend the funding, choosing from options that include rejuvenating high streets, local parks, youth clubs, training and skills, cultural venues, and health services.

Alison Hume says there will be some money available this year to help develop plans with the main money starting to flow in the following financial year.

The MP added that "Unlike the Tories’ list of restrictive options for how towns could spend funding, with Labour’s new plan, the policy options that can be considered by Neighbourhood Boards have doubled, and communities are put at the heart of making these changes".

Alison Hume says that the new scheme is not a re-badging of the previous government's plan and offers local communities more freedon in deciding how to use the money.

Alison Hume says the new Neighbourhood Plan is fully funded and says she is confident that the money will be delivered.
