A three-metre lobster sculpture has been unveiled at Bridlington Harbour, East Yorkshire, celebrating the town's position as the lobster and shellfish capital of Europe.
The woven steel artwork, created by renowned Yorkshire artist Emma Stothard, has been donated to the people of Bridlington by locally based construction firm, Hudson Contract.
The sculpture was unveiled at a ceremony attended by Luke Campbell, mayor of Hull and East Yorkshire, Charlie Dewhirst MP for Bridlington and The Wolds, Anne Handley, leader of East Riding of Yorkshire Council, Angela Walker, Bridlington town mayor, and Neil Orum, chairman of the Harbour Commissioners.
Bridlington harbour lands more shellfish than any other port on the European continent, with the majority exported worldwide. The sculpture stands as a permanent tribute to this maritime heritage and the fishing community that sustains it.
Lesley Jackson, owner of Hudson Contract, said:
"I first saw this sculpture in Emma Stothard's studio in Whitby and absolutely loved it. I said then it should be displayed in the lobster capital of Europe, and here it is. I am delighted to have been able to make this gift to my hometown of Bridlington."
The installation was supported by community voluntary groups Bridlington Ambassadors, Bridlington in Bloom and Brightening Up Bridlington, local businesses Allsigns, West Building Supplies and Watts Quarries, and Bridlington Town Council and East Riding of Yorkshire Council.
Emma Stothard was born in Hull and grew up in Kilnsea. Her wire and willow sculptures of wild and domestic animals and birds are inspired by the creatures of the North York Moors around Whitby, where she now lives, and by memories of an East Yorkshire childhood.
