The Environment Agency has issued flood warnings and alerts for various locations along the Yorkshire coast.
High tides and adverse weather conditions expected overnight on Friday 15 November 2024 are predicted to cause flooding from sea spray and wave overtopping in the early hours of Saturday 16 November 2024.
Flood warnings, which require immediate action, have been issued for:
- Whitby Harbour: Flooding is expected between 02:00 and 04:45 on Saturday. Areas at risk include Abraham's Quay, Pier Road, New Quay Road, Church Street, Campion Dock and Bagdale Road.
- Bridlington - Harbour Road and Floral Pavilion: Flooding is expected between 02:45 and 05:45 on Saturday. At-risk areas include the north side of the dock area, properties on Harbour Road and the Floral Pavilion.
- Bridlington - South Pier: Flooding is also expected between 02:45 and 05:45 on Saturday. The South Pier, Chicken Run Jetty and adjacent car parks off South Cliff Road are most at risk.
- Hornsea: Flooding is expected between 02:45 and 07:00 on Saturday and again between 16:00 and 19:00. Properties along Marine Drive, South Promenade, Hornsea Burton Road, Stream Dike and Foss Beck are at risk.
Flood alerts, indicating that flooding is possible, are in place for:
- Bridlington to Barmston: Flooding is possible between 02:30 and 06:00 on Saturday.
- Skipsea to Mappleton, including Hornsea: Flooding is possible between 02:30 and 07:15 and again between 16:00 and 18:00 on Saturday.
- Staithes to Whitby, including Sandsend and the tidal River Esk: Flooding is possible between 01:45 and 05:15 and again between 16:15 and 20:45 on Saturday.
The Environment Agency is advising people to stay away from beaches, promenades, coastal footpaths and roads as large waves and sea spray could be dangerous. Residents in areas covered by a flood warning are advised to consider enacting their flood plans.
The situation is being closely monitored and updates will be provided by 09:00 on Saturday 16 November 2024.
