The Race and Prizes
The Filey Lions Annual Ball Race involves a large JCB dropping either thousands of numbered balls down an obstacle course on Cargate Hill. Mike Gibson described it as "a great process with these thousands of of balls being lifted up by the bucket of a digger and then just all released".
Participants have the chance to win cash prizes. The "first five balls to arrive in the ball collector at the bottom of the hill win cash prizes," with the first prize being £150. Mike Gibson explained the collection method: "as the balls come down the hill we have a funnel at the end and the first five balls that run through the funnel" determine the winners. He added that if a "lucky winner" is "there on the night you take the money away with you".
Beyond the excitement and prizes, the event serves as a significant fundraiser for the Filey district. Mike Gibson emphasised that "all the money that the Lions raise no matter what event It is it's all used back into the uh local community uh for local charities, local um organizations". He underscored that it "is very much Filey the district that get the money back".
